Se indaga en la aportación científica de Claudio Gay en la República de Chile, enfatizando en su idea de ciencia y en las características y variables del marco epistémico empleado por el sabio galo. También se destaca el constante apoyo logístico, económico y político, tanto dentro del territorio como en el exterior, otorgado a este sabio por las autoridades del Chile Republicano, para terminar con un análisis de las principales contribuciones de Claudio Gay en el campo de las ciencias de la tierra en el Chile decimonónico.

This article examines the scientific contributions of Claudio Gay in the Republic of Chile, emphasizing his idea on science and the characteristics and variables of the epistemic framework applied by this scholarly Frenchman. It also highlights the constant logistical, economic and political support that he received, whether in Chile or abroad, from the authorities of the Republic of Chile, before finalizing with an analysis of Gay’s principle contributions to the earth sciences in 19th-century Chile.
