The man with the golden arm Otto Preminger).

In our research we analyze the evolution of the orchestral timbral effects from their use in the opera of the Second Vienna School to the cinema of the second half of the SXX. Placing opera as the main predecessor of cinema in terms of musical narrativity, we conducted a timbral study of the music of 4 different examples of Viennese avant-garde operas (Moses und Aron and Erwartung by Arnold Schönberg and Wozzeck and Lulu by Alban Berg) and 4 films from the second half of the SXX (Doctor Faust by Richard Burton, Force of evil by Abraham Polonsky, The Cobweb by Vicente Minelli and The Man with the golden arm Otto Preminger). In this way, we carry out a comparative analysis, based on what has been studied in the selected bibliography and showing the way in which, while the atonal aesthetics of the Vienna School opera is readapt for its later cinematographic use, the concept of the timbral maintains its classical symbolic associations. Table 1 represents the types of atonal uses in the opera and film examples. Table 2 represents the instrumental timbral found during the analysis work, used in each opera and film. It also shows the situations that it supports and the moments in which it reinforces a certain dramatic feeling. Table 3 reflects the evolution of atonalism and timbral in general. In this way, we have documented the evolution of the general use of atonality in opera and later in cinema, to later compare its timbral uses and thus extract the different evolutions.
