Resumen de La iconografía de la Victoria: Nikoma(chos) en un entalle romano procedente de la ciudad de Magdala (Migdal, Iudaea/Syria Palaestina)

En este artículo se analiza la iconografía de una pieza hallada en la excavación de Magdala (Migdal, Galilea, Israel). Está realizada en piedra y cuenta con el dibujo de una Victoria alada sobre una biga, con el látigo al viento para iniciar la marcha, una tipología de escena con gran trascendencia en la Historia del Arte. Sobre la imagen de la Victoria se encuentra la inscripción Nikoma(chou), que muy posiblemente hace referencia al nombre del dueño del entalle. El estilo, la iconografía de la pieza y la cronología del contexto arqueológico remiten a una cronología del s. I d.C. o algo posterior. Se trata de una pieza excepcional, en base a la combinación de epigrafía e iconografía en la misma pieza, pues en este caso texto e imagen se relacionan, se complementan y se retroalimentan. Por ello el estudio iconográfico del entalle es determinante para comprender el valor artístico de esta diminuta obra de arte.

This article analyses the iconography of a piece found at the Magdala excavation site (Migdal, Galilee, Israel). It is made of stone and depicts a winged Victory on a chariot, using a whip to initiate the march, a type of scene of great significance in the history of art. Above the image of the Victory is the inscription Nikoma(chou), which most likely refers to the name of the owner of the intaglio. The style, the iconography of the piece and the chronology of the archaeological context suggest a chronology of the 1st century AD or somewhat later. This is an exceptional piece, based on the combination of epigraphy and iconography on the same surface, as in this case text and image are related, and complement each other. For this reason, the iconographic study of the carving is crucial to understanding the artistic value of this tiny work of art.
