    This paper aimed to investigate the reading strategies employed by a group of indigenous students that is part of the Tutorial Education Program (PET in Portuguese language), From the Federal University of Tocantins. This research is based on a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative) and is linked with studies which analyze reading practices in educational contexts, by seeking to specifically identify the most common reading strategies among indigenous students in their process of reading comprehension. In addition, we aim to discuss the implications of these strategies in the training and the development of proficient readers. For this purpose, this research is underpinned by the Applied Linguistics principles and some scholars who focus on reading: Solé (1998), Kleiman (2013), Menegassi (2010), Freire (1989). Therefore, in order to meet our purpose, we will use the data collected through a questionnaire which was applied at a tutorial event geared to the indigenous students. The analyses showed that the strategies employed by the students before, during and after the reading are essential to their reading comprehension and to the rise of a proficient reader who makes inference and activates previous knowledge in order to make multiple meanings.

    Este artigo teve como objetivo investigar as estratégias de leitura adotadas por um grupo de alunos indígenas que faz parte do Programa de Educação Tutorial (PET), de uma universidade pública, no estado do Tocantins. A pesquisa centra-se na abordagem mista (quantitativo e qualitativo) e vincula-se aos estudos que investigam as práticas de leitura em contextos educacionais, buscando especificamente identificar as estratégias de leitura mais utilizadas pelos alunos indígenas durante o processo de compreensão leitora e discutir as implicações dessas estratégias na formação e no desenvolvimento de leitores competentes. Para tanto, a pesquisa está fundamentada nos princípios da Linguística Aplicada e em estudiosos que têm a leitura como foco, sendo eles: Solé (1998), Kleiman (2013), Menegassi (2010), Freire (1989). Dessa forma, para atender ao objetivo proposto serão utilizadas informações coletadas por meio de um questionário aplicado durante a observação de um encontro de tutoria aos indígenas. A partir das análises, foi possível compreender que as estratégias usadas pelos acadêmicos, antes, durante e depois da leitura são fundamentais para compreensão leitora e a formação de um leitor competente que faz inferência e ativa os conhecimentos prévios, conhecimento de mundo, na construção dos múltiplos sentidos.
