    It is widely known the capacity of the Catholic Church in renew itself from the challenges that are imposed on it by History. This ability of reading the “signs of times” and adapting itself is highlighted as one of the justifications to its longevity and vitality. In recent decades, this Church’s feature is back being highlighted as the challenges brought by post-modern society increase its sense of survival and reaction, and cause it to resume practices that seemed to be forgotten and that, at this moment, restore the vigor to it. Facing in Brazil, as also in all west the loss of believers, the Catholicism renews itself and resumes some elements of its old fervor. In this sense, we will deal here about one of the s most significant components of this renovation, that is the movement of “New Communities”, whose main representative in Brazil is “Canção Nova”. But before analyzing this movement, we will try to establish the historical aspects of the Church’s action in relation to modernity, to understand its position today in the context of post-modernity.

    É amplamente reconhecida a capacidade da Igreja Católica de se renovar a partir dos desafios que lhe são impostos pela história. Essa habilidade de ler os “sinais dos tempos” e se adaptar é destacada como uma das justificativas para sua longevidade e vitalidade. Nas últimas décadas, essa característica da Igreja volta a ser ressaltada, à medida que os desafios trazidos pela sociedade pós-moderna aguçam seu sentido de sobrevivência e reação e a fazem retomar práticas que pareciam esquecidas e que, neste momento, lhe restituem o vigor. Enfrentando no Brasil, como também em todo Ocidente, a perda de fiéis, o catolicismo se renova e retoma alguns elementos de seu antigo fervor. Nesse sentido, trataremos aqui de um dos componentes mais significativos dessa renovação que é o movimento de “Novas Comunidades”, cujo principal representante no Brasil é a “Canção Nova”. Antes, porém, de analisarmos esse movimento, procuraremos estabelecer os aspectos históricos da ação da Igreja em relação à modernidade, para compreendermos sua posição atual no quadro da pós-modernidade.
