The evolution of levels of lead in the atmosphere of Aviles (Asturias) during 1990 and 1991 have been evaluated. To do so, 1754 sample filters installed in three different locations (one in the city and two in the surroundings) were processed for the evaluation. These numbers reflect a coverage of 71,9% in 1990 and 88,3% in 1991. The samples were then digested and analysed by Flame-AAS. The mean annual values observed in the three locations were always down 25% of the legal limit established (2 μg/m 3,1 atm and 273 °K). Moreover, during 1991 the mean values observed were less than in 1990, being more elevated during winter in all cases. From June 1991 on, a drastic reduction, of about 80% as compared to the levels observed in the same months of the preceding year, was observed. This date coincides with the enforcement of the regulation of maximum levels of lead in petrol (changing from 0,4 g/l to 0,15 g/l).
