  José Ortiz y Sanz (Aielo de Malferit, 1739 – València, 1822) fue el autor de la versión española de la obra de arquitectura de Vitruvio (editada en la Imprenta Real en 1787 reinando Carlos III). Inició su traducción en San Felipe (Xàtiva) en 1777, siendo vicario mayor de la parroquia de la iglesia colegial de esta ciudad, pero tropezó con muchas dificultades para entender algunos pasajes de la obra de este célebre arquitecto de la antigüedad (de la época del emperador Augusto), esto hizo que se le planteara la disyuntiva de tener que abandonar la versión española que había iniciado, o viajar a Italia en donde se encontraban los principales códices conocidos de dicha obra, y además, los monumentos más notables de la antigüedad de cuya construcción trataba Vitruvio; finalmente decidió esto último a pesar de que tenía que costearse el viaje y estancia en Italia. Del viaje de ida a Italia en 1778 trata este escrito.

  José Ortiz y Sanz (Aielo de Malferit, 1739 - València, 1822) was the author of the Spanish version of Vitruvio’s architectural work (published in the Royal Press in 1787 with Carlos III reigning). He began his translation in San Felipe (Xàtiva) in 1777, being vicar major of the parish of the collegiate church of this city, but he encountered many difficulties to understand some passages of the work of this famous architect of antiquity (from the time of Emperor Augustus), this made him face the dilemma of having to abandon the Spanish version that he had started, or travel to Italy where the main known codices of said work were found, and also the most notable monuments of the antiquity of whose construction Vitruvio treated; he finally decided the latter even though he had to pay for the trip and stay in Italy. This writing deals with the outward journey to Italy in 1778.
