Considerações sobre o modal teleológico

    This paper presents syntactic and semantic properties of the teleological modal. Based on authors like Sæbo (2001, 2017), von Fintel & Iatridou (2005) and Copley (2010), we approach aspects related to the construction in which this modal appears, showing its differences in relation to the other root modals - interpreted in a low position in the structure. We show how a construction with the teleological modal relates information that corresponds to the way and the goal. We also approach modal orientation and its co-occurrence with a negation item. As for the modal orientation, we relate the participant for whom the modal is oriented with the position in which it is interpreted in the structure. As for the negation, we show that it does not operate only on the event described in the modal sentence, but also on the relationship between way and goal, negation the biunivocity of this relationship.

    Este artigo apresenta propriedades sintáticas e semânticas do auxiliar modal teleológico. Tendo por base autores como Sæbo (2001, 2017), von Fintel & Iatridou (2005) e Copley (2010), abordamos aspectos relativos à construção em que esse modal figura, mostrando suas diferenças em relação a outros modais de raiz - interpretados em posição baixa na estrutura. Mostramos como uma construção com o modal teleológico relaciona informações que correspondem a meio e meta. Abordamos também fatores como a orientação modal e a sua coocorrência com um item de negação. Quanto à orientação modal, relacionamos o participante para o qual o modal é orientado com a posição em que é interpretado na estrutura. Quanto à negação, mostramos que esta não opera apenas sobre o evento descrito na sentença modal, mas sim sobre a relação entre meio e meta, negando a biunivocidade dessa relação.
