    This paper examines the use of the Present of the Indicative in headlines and subtitles of Brazilian online newspapers. The analysis is based on Cognitive Grammar, and aims at investigating the cognitive underpinnings for using the Present of the Indicative to refer to past events, contrasting it with uses of past tense. The investigation draws on the notion of epistemic imediaticity, associated to the present simple in English (LANGACKER, 2001, 2009), and expands it by proposing the notion of pragmatic imediaticity, related to the performance of the speech act of reporting. The results show that the Present of the Indicative predominates in headlines, and that the most frequent temporal combination is HEADLINE (Present of the Indicative) – SUBTITLE (Past).

    Este artigo examina o uso do Presente do Indicativo em manchetes e subtítulos de jornais online em português, sob a perspectiva da Gramática Cognitiva. A análise tem o objetivo de investigar os mecanismos cognitivos e pragmáticos associados ao uso do Presente do Indicativo para referência a eventos passados, contrastando-o com usos do Passado no mesmo contexto. A investigação parte da noção de imediaticidade epistêmica, referente ao presente simples em inglês (LANGACKER, 2001, 2009), expandindo-a para propor a noção de imediaticidade pragmática, relacionada à realização do ato de fala de noticiar. Os resultados indicam que o uso do Presente do Indicativo predomina nas manchetes, e que a combinação temporal mais frequente é MANCHETE (Presente do Indicativo) – SUBTÍTULO (Pretérito).
