La inmigración antillana en el desarrollo de la economía azucarera avileña a inicios del siglo xx

    Elartículo resume un resultado del proyecto de investigaciónProcesosocio-histórico avileño, asociado alPrograma Nacional de Historia,en el que se emplea entre otros métodos y técnicas el análisis de documentos, publicacionesperiódicasy de investigadores locales, que permitieron exponer, coherentemente, la incidencia de la inmigración antillana, principalmente jamaicanos yhaitianosen el fomento y desarrollo de la economíaazucarera durante las primeras décadas del siglo XXen el territorio que conforma la actual provincia Ciego de Ávila.El proceso investigativo posibilitó la integración de elementos hasta entonces tratados de forma parcial por historiadores locales y nacionales, así como nuevos elementos hasta el presente insuficientementedivulgados en la historiografía; aunque, conservados en las tradicionescomunitarias de la provincia.Se destacan las condiciones en que se produce la inmigración antillana, traídos como fuerza de trabajo barata por las compañías azucareras cometiéndose graves violaciones de sus derechos humanos mediante la violación de contratos y leyes, mociones discriminatorias y la repatriación obligatoria de haitianos en momentos de la grave crisis económica de los años 30 de aquel siglo; así como las condiciones de vida infrahumanas a que fueron sometidos durante medio siglo hasta su reivindicación como seres humanos por la triunfante revolución delprimero de enero de 1959.El objetivo de este artículo esdemostrar el vínculo entre la inmigraciónantillana –jamaicanos yhaitianos-de las primeras décadas del siglo XX con el desarrollo de la economía azucarera de la región avileña.

    The article summarizes a result of the Avilanian socio-historical process research project, associated with the National History Program, in which, among other methods and techniques, the analysis of documents, periodicals and local researchers is used, which allowed to coherently expose the incidence of Antillean immigration, mainly Jamaicans and Haitians, in the promotion and development of the sugar economy during the first decadesof the 20th century in the territory that makes up the current province of Ciego de Ávila. The investigative process made possible the integration of elements until then partially treated by local and national historians, as well as new elements up to nowinsufficiently disclosed in historiography; although, preserved in the community traditions of the province. The conditions in which Antillean immigration occurs, brought in as a cheap labor force by the sugar companies, committing serious violations of their human rights through the violation of contracts and laws, discriminatory motions and the mandatory repatriation of Haitians at times of grave economic crisis of the 30s of that century; as well as the subhuman living conditions to which they were subjected for half a century until their vindication as human beings by the triumphant revolution of January 1, 1959. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the link between Antillean immigration -Jamaicans and Haitians-from the first decades of the 20th century with the development of the sugar economy in the Avilanian region.
