Thiamine pyrophosphate is an enzymatic cofactor necessary in the energy metabolism of cells. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of the inclusion of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) as a partial replacement of energy or as an additive in growing guinea pigs. Three hundred and sixty 10-day-old weaned animals with an average weight of 288g were used. The animals were randomly distributed in three treatments. Treatment one (T1) with TPP considered as an energy source; treatment two (T2) without TPP and treatment three (T3)equivalent to T2 plus TPP (1kg per ton of feed)The animals of the three treatments were subjected to the same forage feeding system, which consisted of freeaccess to a mixture of rye grass and alfalfa. For each treatment, 120 animals were used that were randomly distributed in four pools, placing 20 animals in each one. The evaluation period was 56 days. No differences were found between treatments for weight gain (p> 0.05);however, the cost benefit was greater for T1. It is concluded that under the experimental conditions the TPP in growing-fattening guinea pigs representa potential source of energy replacement.
