    La enfermedad de Alzheimer es hoy en día la principal causa de demencia en el mundo. Aunque las causas que la desencadenan no están esclarecidas, si se conocen los mecanismos que inducen la muerte neuronal; acumulación de péptido β-amiloide, precipitados de proteína-Tau hiperfosforilada y daño por especies reactivas de oxígeno a las membranas de las células. Debido a su carácter multifactorial esta enfermedad carece de un tratamiento eficaz, tan sólo es posible ralentizar su avance. Los tratamientos más utilizados incluyen inhibidores de la acetilcolinesterasa y memantina; sin embargo, en ocasiones es necesario el uso de antiinflamatorios no esteroideos, neuroprotectores y/o anticuerpos monoclonales.

    Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia in the world today. The very first causes of this pathology are not clear, however, the mechanisms that induces neuronal death are known. These mechanisms are the accumulation of peptide Aβ, the precipitation of hyperphosphorylated Tau protein and the damage caused by reactive oxygen species. As this disease has a multifactorial development, there is no effective treatment. Current treatments are only capable of slowing the progress of the disease. The most widely used treatments in this pathology are acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, neuroprotectors and monoclonal antibodies are also studied for their use in.
