Desde la mirada de los estudios de la cultura y la hegemonía del poder estainvestigación explora a partir de la perspectiva sus habitantes, el sentir popular yla apropiación de la celebración religiosa de San Pedro y San Pablo en la parroquiaPicoazá (Portoviejo, Ecuador). Para este fin se acude a la metodología cualitativa,utilizando la entrevista como herramienta de corte etnográfico. Los resultadosplantean un colectivo apegado a la religión con connotaciones significativas enla organización social y cultural del entorno, dando paso a la reproducción detradiciones heredadas de generación en generación. Las mismas que, a la par,fetichizan y “esencializan” la actividad e invisibilizan otros aspectos inherentes alas prácticas culturales.

From the perspective of the| studies of culture and the hegemony of power, this research explores its inhabitants’ perspective, the widespread feeling, and the appropriation of the religious celebration of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in the Picoazá parish (Portoviejo–Ecuador). For this purpose, qualitative methodology is used, using the interview as an ethnographic tool. The results suggest a group attached to religion with significant connotations in the socialand cultural organization of the environment, giving way to the reproduction of traditions inherited from generation to generation. At the same time, the same ones fetishize and essentialize the activity and make other aspects inherent to cultural practices invisible.
