Se revisa taxonómicamente el género Buthus Leach, 1815 en la Península Ibérica. Se examinaron 291 especímenes de 48 localidades, incluyendo topotipos de las cuatro especies actualmente reconocidas: Buthus elongatus Rossi, 2012, Buthus ibericus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004, Buthus montanus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004 y Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789).
En esta primera contribución, todas ellas son confirmadas como válidas y redescritas en detalle y se aclara su distribución geográfica. Por otra parte, Buthus europaeus tridentatus Franganillo, 1918, es confirmado como sinónimo posterior de B. occitanus y se designan neotipos de ambos taxones para estabilizar su nomenclatura. Por último, se describen seis especies nuevas del sur de España. La diversidad de Buthus en el Poniente europeo alcanza ahora 10 especies, todas endémicas y en su mayoría geográficamente microlocalizadas.

The genus Buthus Leach, 1815 is taxonomically revised for the Iberian Peninsula. We examined 291 specimens from 48 localities, including topotypes of the four currently recognised species: Buthus elongatus Rossi, 2012, Buthus ibericus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004, Buthus montanus Lourenço & Vachon, 2004 and Buthus occitanus (Amoreux, 1789). In this first contribution, all of them are confirmed as valid and redescribed in detail, and their geographic distribution is clarified. Also, Buthus europaeus tridentatus Franganillo, 1918 is confirmed as a junior synonym of B. occitanus and neotypes are designated for both taxa to stabilise the nomenclature. Finally, six new species are described from southern Spain. The Western European diversity of Buthus now reaches 10 species, all of them being endemics and mostly having a limited geographic range.
