El cuento Nosotros tres; Por dinero (ATU 1697): de la predicación medieval a la tradición oral de la península ibérica

    En este artículo se examinan las versiones ibéricas e iberoamericanas del cuento chusco conocido como Nosotros tres; por el dinero, que trata sobre tres viajeros que —por intentar hablar en una lengua extranjera que desconocen— se incriminan ellos mismos de un asesinato que no han cometido. La relativa antigüedad de este relato está atestiguada por la versión que John Bromyard entreveró en su Summa predicantium, obra que se remonta a la primera mitad del siglo XIV. En este ensayo se identifican los subtipos de la narración que han sido registrados en las áreas lingüísticas del español, del portugués y del catalán. Una vez descritas esas variantes del cuento, se comparan con las documentadas en otras regiones de Europa Occidental, por una parte, y en el norte de África, por otra. Los resultados de este análisis nos permitirán evaluar el grado de analogía entre las versiones ibéricas y las de regiones vecinas.

    This paper examines the Iberian and Ibero-American versions of the facetious tale known as We Three; For Money, which deals with three travelers who—trying to communicate in a foreign language they do not know—incriminate themselves in a murder that they have not committed. The relative antiquity of this fiction is attested by the version that John Bromyard included in his Summa predicantium, which dates back to the first half of the fourteenth century. This essay identifies the subtypes of the narrative that have been collected in the linguistic areas of Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan. Once these branches of the tale have been described, they are compared with those from other areas of Western Europe, on the one hand, and from North Africa, on the other. The results of this analysis will allow us to evaluate the degree of analogy between the Iberian versions and those of the neighboring regions.
