La OMS define el sobrepeso y la obesidad como la acumulación anormal o excesiva de grasa que puede afectar la salud. Esta afectación, se ha asociado con varias enfermedades no transmisibles, como diabetes, enfermedades cardiovasculares y cáncer, y es una de las principales causas de muerte prematura. Asimismo, con la actual pandemia de Covid-19, se ha observado que los pacientes con obesidad tienen mayor riesgo de padecer la infección, y son más susceptibles de desarrollar complicaciones severas una vez contagiados, a su vez incrementando la probabilidad de hospitalización y mortalidad.

The WHO defines overweight and obesity as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can affect health. This affectation has been associated with several non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer, and is one of the main causes of premature death. Likewise, with the current Covid-19 pandemic, it has been observed that obese patients have a higher risk of suffering from the infection, and are more susceptible to developing severe complications once infected, in turn increasing the probability of hospitalization and mortality.
