This article looks at context as a dynamically changing object, exploring the repercussions on the linguistic model when one takes seriously the idea that the Context of Situation can change throughout an interaction. I will first present three concepts I think very important in the modelling of context: that context is dynamic, that context is a semiotic construct, and that context is subjective. I then explore how the notions of Field, Tenor and Mode can be re-conceptualised on the basis of these four concepts, when viewed as dynamic, semiotic and subjective objects.
