n the 1970s, I published several papers on diagnostic testing of the conceptual understanding of structural behaviour of engineering graduates1–4 based on testing Arup graduates. The Arup Partnership sponsored the development of a two-day training course, ‘Understanding Structural Behaviour’, to address this defi ciency.
I also wrote a textbook5 which demonstrated how qualitative understanding of structural behaviour could be applied to conventional topics in structural analysis. This approach is unlike most other published texts or books in that it takes the qualitative and intuitive understanding of structural behaviour as the priority
