    • Palaces and Houses in Late Gothic Milan (XIV-XV century). The “Grand Palagio” of the Pusterla Family in the Contrada della Balla As it is well known, in De magnalibus Mediolani- one of the most important sources on Medieval Milan - Bonvesin de la Riva offers plenty of information thanks to which it is possible to outline a general picture of the main characteristics of the city in the fourteenth century.

Residential architecture took often the shape of “cittadelle” in which the actual living private spaces co-exhisted with other public uses, espe- cially devoted to commerce. This typical organization will condition the development of the Milanese “palazzo” in the following century.

The “grand palace” of the Pusterla family in the “contrada della Balla”, was an example of this tradition: the building stretched across the width of a vast block with many courtyards, one of which was used as a public market.

Through the study of the data offered by ancient descriptions and archival documents, it is possible to go back to a first hypothetical planimetric reconstruction of the complex – of which today only faint traces remain – and to compare it with contemporary residential architectures built in the same area, the political, religious and commercial center of the city.
