Este artículo intenta explicar la naturaleza de la educación latinoamericana y sus fundamentos. Además, intenta responder por qué los gobiernos de los respectivos países que conforman la región se suceden, cambian su ideología y orientación, pero el sistema escolar sigue en pie. Lejos de atribuirle los motivos a la casualidad, hace un repaso histórico sobre cómo se fue conformando Latinoamérica, la influencia que los países colonizadores y la Iglesia Católica tuvieron –y siguen teniendo– sobre ella, y el lugar que todos estos factores ocuparon a la hora de pensar y conformar un sistema educativo para la región; dejando en evidencia los intereses que están en juego a la hora de pensar la educación. Finalmente, propone tomar las riendas, construir una educación común desde y para Latinoamérica (incluyendo a todas las comunidades que la habitan), con sus propias características y velando por sus propios intereses: educar para la emancipación y emanciparse para educar.

This article attempts to explain the very nature of Latin-American education and why it is so. Furthermore, it aims to clarify why each country’s government changes, shifting ideologies and orientation, but the school system remains essentially unaltered. Far from attributing the reasons to chance, it makes a historic review of the conformation of Latin America, the influence that coloniser countries and the Catholic Church had – and still have – over it, and the place of all of those factors when thinking of and building an educational system for the region, making the interests at stake when thinking about education very clear. Finally, it proposes to take control, to build a common education from and for Latin America (including all the communities living in it), with its own traits and taking care of its own interests: to educate for emancipation and emancipate to educate.
