    Este artículo muestra las relaciones que se dieron entre conocimiento y política a fines del s. XVIII en el reino de Chile. Los protagonistas de nuestra historia fueron un objeto y un fortuito acontecimiento. Sus peculiares historias quedaron estrechamente vinculadas. El primero un objeto, el llamado «pino de Chile», despertó el interés de naturalistas y políticos. El segundo un hecho particular: a fines de 1780 el navío de guerra San Pedro Alcántara, fondeado en la ciudad de Concepción, sufrió el ataque de un rayo mostrando la necesidad que en esos años se tenía de maderas. Este accidente provocó el descubrimiento de nuevos «pinares» en territorios del «país de indios». Su descubrimiento desencadenó y movilizó acciones cognoscitivas y políticas tanto en Madrid como en Chile provocando la actuación de actores locales. Este particular objeto y este imprevisto hecho mostraron no sólo la relación entre conocimiento y política también la importancia de la gestión local de lo imperial.

    This article shows the relationship between knowledge and politics at the end of the eighteenth century in the kingdom of Chile. The focus of the article is an object and a fortuitous event. Their peculiar stories were closely linked. The first is an object called «pino de Chile», which aroused the interest of naturalists and politicians. The second, is a particular event: at the end of 1780 the battleship San Pedro Alcántara, anchored in the city of Concepción, suffered a lightning attack that demonstrated the importance of wood in this historical period. This accident led to the discovery of new «pine forests» in the «país de indios». The discovery caused and mobilized cognitive and political actions both in Madrid and Chile, resulting in those involved locally taking formal action. This particular object and this unforeseen event showed not only the relationship between natural knowledge and politics, but also the importance of local empire management.

    Cet article montre la relation entre le savoir et la politique à la fin du xviiie siècle dans le royaume du Chili. Les protagonistes décrits dans cet article sont un objet et un événement fortuit. Leurs histoires particulières furent intimement liées. Le premier, un objet, le dénommé « pin du Chili », a suscité l'intérêt des naturalistes et des hommes politiques. Le second est un événement particulier : à la fin de 1780, le navire de guerre San Pedro Alcántara, ancré dans la ville de Concepción, subit une attaque de foudre révélant le besoin de bois à cette époque. Cet accident a provoqué la découverte de nouvelles forêts de pins dans les territoires du « pays des Indiens ». Sa découverte a déclenché et mobilisé des actions culturelles et politiques tant à Madrid qu'au Chili, entraînant l’intervention des acteurs locaux. Cet objet particulier et cet événement imprévu ont montré non seulement la relation entre la connaissance et la politique, mais aussi l'importance de la gestion locale au niveau impérial.
