El autor hace un recorrido a través de la antigua carrera de acompañamiento e improvisación, paulatinamente abandonada en los sucesivos planes de estudio de música de los conservatorios españoles. Aborda el contraste entre el haber sido los pioneros de Europa a dedicar una revolucionaria atención a la improvisación hasta la actual situación de tremendo abandono, mientras que, siguiendo las directrices de Bolonia, en el panorama europeo va cobrando un progresivo relieve.
