El acoso, conocido en términos legales como acecho (stalking), es generalmente definido como una pluralidad de actos (en lugar de uno solo) que, individualmente valorados, pueden constituir un comportamiento legal pero que, por el contrario, cuando estos se realizan con la finalidad de infundir miedo o angustia, pueden constituir actos ilegales. Considerado delito en diferentes países (Inglaterra, Estados Unidos, Alemania, Italia etc.) en España fue tipificado con la modificación operada por Ley 1/2015. La reciente Sentencia del Tribunal Supremo 599/2021 analiza sus requisitos.
