Resumen de Cambio climático e imagen fotoperiodística: evolución de su representación gráfica en el diario El País

  El distanciamiento físico y psicológico que experimentan las sociedades modernas respecto al cambio climático se traduce en la dependencia absoluta de su representación mediática para conocer el alcance y desarrollo de esta amenaza. Sin embargo, resulta difícilmente perceptible en el día a día y raras veces genera imágenes de interés para la audiencia, por lo que su acceso a las redacciones sigue siendo aún una tarea complicada. Nuestro estudio analiza la representación gráfica del cambio climático durante dos periodos no consecutivos en el diario generalista El País. Para ello, hemos seleccionado aquellas imágenes que han contribuido a ilustrar los textos informativos y divulgativos relacionados con esta amenaza entre abril de 2016 y marzo de 2017, en un lapso de tiempo marcado por una inusual actividad del fenómeno costero «El Niño», y durante el año 2019, en el que las movilizaciones estudiantiles han situado la emergencia climática en el centro de la agenda pública. A partir de una muestra compuesta por más de 350 fotografías, los resultados evidencian un cambio de tendencia en la representación gráfica del cambio climático, al presentar este problema desde un enfoque social, desplazando del punto de atención a expertos y representantes públicos y superando las limitaciones del imaginario colectivo tradicional, caracterizado por la presencia de animales en peligro y de territorios degradados. Estas claves narrativas se alinean con las recomendaciones del proyecto Covering Climate Now, una iniciativa de la que El País forma parte desde septiembre de 2019.

  The physical and psychological detachment of modern societies from climate change means that they are totally dependent on the media’s representation of the extent and development of this threat. However, it is hardly perceptible on a day-to-day basis and rarely generates images of interest to the audience, so its access to newsrooms is still a complicated task. Our study analyses the graphic representation of climate change during two non-consecutive periods in the generalist daily El País. For this purpose, we have selected those images that have contributed to illustrate the informative and informative texts related to this threat between April 2016 and March 2017, in a period of time marked by an unusual activity of the coastal phenomenon «El Niño», and during the year 2019, in which the student mobilisations have placed the climate emergency at the centre of the public agenda. Based on a sample of more than 350 photographs, the results show a change of trend in the graphic representation of climate change, by presenting this problem from a social approach, shifting the focus from experts and public representatives and overcoming the limitations of the traditional collective imaginary, characterised by the presence of endangered animals and degraded territories. These key narratives are in line with the recommendations of the Covering Climate Now project, an initiative that El País has been part of since September 2019.
