    Este texto analiza la evolución de las redes diplomática y consular de la España de Alfonso XIII, interrogándose sobre su adaptación a la realidad internacional y preguntándose sobre su grado de adecuación a las necesidades de España en su actuación más allá de las fronteras nacionales. Para ello, las confrontamos, en primer lugar, a los cambios que fue conociendo el escenario internacional en las tres décadas que conforman nuestro periodo de estudio, y en las que la Gran Guerra desempeñó un papel primordial, así como a las orientaciones de la política exterior española; y, en segundo lugar, a los datos del comercio exterior y de emigración, factores determinantes para la configuración de estas representaciones. Con todo ello, podemos apreciar que no dejó España de reaccionar a la realidad cambiante del mundo; logró dotarse de una aceptable red consular para atender sus necesidades comerciales y migratorias; y, en definitiva, supo modernizar las redes diplomática y consular y adaptar sus características a los nuevos tiempos.

    This text analyzes the evolution of the diplomatic and consular networks of Alfonso XIII’s Spain, regarding its adaptation to international reality and its degree of adaptation to the needs of Spain in its action beyond national borders.To do this, we confront them, first of all, with the changes that the international scene had undergone in the three decades that make up our period of study, and in which the Great War played a primary role, as well as with the political orientations of Spanish foreign policy; and, secondly, to the data on foreign trade and emigration, determining factors for the configuration of these representations. With all this, we can appreciate that Spain did not stop reacting to the changing reality of the world; managed to equip itself with an acceptable consular network to attend to its commercial and migratory needs; and, in the end, it knew how to modernize the diplomatic and consular networks and adapt their characteristics to the new times.
