El presente trabajo estudia el aprovisionamiento de monturas para el ejército y su impacto en el área valenciana durante la Primera Guerra Carlista. El secular abandono de la cría caballar y la excesiva duración de la guerra incrementaron las dificultades para obtener caballos con determinadas características. Ello obligó al Gobierno a recurrir a diversos medios, tales como remonta, requisas y compras en metálico, para cubrir las bajas y crear nuevas unidades de Caballería. Los principales perjudicados acabaron siendo los labradores valencianos, muchos de ellos integrados también en la Milicia Nacional. Cuando lograban poner sus animales a salvo de la rapiña carlista, se veían obligados a entregarlos al Gobierno a cambio de recibos que sólo eran válidos para pagar contribuciones.

This paper studies the supply of horses for the army and its impact on the Valencian area during the First Carlist War. The centuries-old abandonment of horse breeding, and the excessive length of the war increased the difficulties in obtaining horses of a particular type. This forced the Government to resort to various means, such as remounts, requisitions and cash purchases, in order to cover casualties, and create new cavalry units. The main people affected were the Valencian farmers, many of whom were also members of the National Militia. When they managed to save their animals from the Carlists’ plundering, they were forced to hand them over to the Government in exchange for receipts that were only valid for tax –payments.
