  • Resumen
    • The triclinium of the domus of Palazzo Diotallevi at Rimini hosts two mosaic scenes known as the Mosaic of the Hercules bibax and the Mosaic of the Ships. The mosaic scenes have always been studied separately in works that aimed to date the mosaic and to identify the port scene represented. An original detail on the ʻibis pecking the snakeʼ depicted in the Mosaic of the Hercules bibax, links the two scenes and sheds new light on the meaning of the pavement mosaic, as well as on the geographical narrative of the scene and the activities of the domus’ owner. This paper explores the Mosaic of the Hercules bibax by focusing on the iconography of the ibis with the snake and on the repertoire of wild and exotic animals in the scene, in order to assess the apotropaic and symbolic messages of the mosaic from Palazzo Diotallevi in Rimini.
