    La idolatría como concepto jurídico, teológico, filosófico y canonista jugó un papel muy importante en el desarrollo de la personalidad jurídica del indio en América. Este trabajo se centra en recorrer la historia del concepto de idolatría y de los usos políticos de éste en el arzobispado de México en el contexto del siglo XVI a partir del establecimiento del obispado de México y hasta inicios del siglo XVII en los años posteriores al Concilio Tercero Provincial Mexicano de 1585. Las fuentes utilizadas son variadas e incluyen archivos, impresos y manuscritos de la época y bibliografía complementaria que permite contextualizar a los autores y al concepto de idolatría en su justa dimensión.

    Idolatry as a juridical, theological, philosophical, and canonical concept strongly influenced the development of the legal personality of the Indian in America. Idolatry is a polysemic concept with meanings contingent upon the time and purpose of analyses, and the approach adopted. Setting out from the Old Testament vision, this study traces the history of the category of idolatry and the controversies involved in its development, seen through the eyes of the authors who examined it and the process that produced the concept the Catholic church applied, beginning in the 16th century with the establishment of the archbishopric of Mexico, through the early 17th century in the years following the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585.
