Resumen de Zeit und Geld in Goethes "Faust"

Not only for Goethe the second half of the 20s in the 19th century is characterized by the perception of a steady acceleration of communicative and economic global conditions. The article deals with the correlation between these ambivalent experiences and the work on the second part of Faust, for which the figure of anticipation plays a decisive role with the generation of the paper money, in the first act, and Faust’s death, in the fifth act. The article discusses the connection between the two motives and the character of the »highest moment« in the wager between Faust and Mephisto.

Die zweite Hälfte der 20er Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts ist nicht nur für Goethe von der Wahrnehmung einer stetigen Beschleunigung kommunikativer und ökonomischer Weltverhältnisse geprägt. Der Beitrag gilt dem Zusammenhang dieser ambivalenten Erfahrungen mit der Arbeit am zweiten Teil des Faust, für den mit der Schaffung des Papiergelds im 1. Akt und mit Fausts Tod im 5. Akt die Figur des zeitlichen Vorgriffs – die Antizipation – eine entscheidende Rolle spielt. Der Beitrag fragt nach dem Zusammenhang beider Motive und erörtert den Charakter des »höchsten Augenblicks« in der Wette zwischen Faust und Mephisto.
