    Former GDR athletic Ines Geipel has written lots of essays and autobiographic novels dealing with Eastern Germany. Geipel claims to provide psychological exploration of both past and present totalitarian tendencies in East German society. Starting with an introduction into Geipel’s recent book Umkämpfte Zone, this essay analyses the Gnostic (or ›Manichaean‹) implications of Geipel’s diagnostic and therapeutic ambitions. Their origins seem to be found in the Cold War Era. Nevertheless, Cold War patterns are still enduring in present Germany’s intellectual life.

    Die Ex-DDR-Athletin Ines Geipel ist durch semidokumentarische Texte über Ostdeutschland bekanntgeworden. In ihrem oft autobiographischen Schreiben erhebt Geipel gesellschaftsdiagnostische und -therapeutische Ansprüche. Sie sind exemplarisch an der jüngsten Veröffentlichung Umkämpfte Zone zu analysieren. Das Buch thematisiert nationalsozialistische sowie stalinistische Erinnerungslasten anhand der eigenen Familiengeschichte. Geipels Wunsch nach Erlösung von deutschen Kollektivtraumata verweist auf ein gnostisch-dualistisches Geschichts- und Gesellschaftsdenken. Seine politische Blütezeit erlebte es im Kalten Krieg, doch seine argumentativen Muster sind in der heutigen Bundesrepublik weiterhin virulent.
