    Antoine Houdar de La Motte’s Inès de Castro is a tragedy that plays an important part today in the history of theatre as a precursor of tearful drama but little is known of the actual battle occasioned by the success of the play, the climax of which drew abundant tears from the public and triggered an intense debate. The study of the polemical texts published between August 1723 and March 1724 show that the battle over Inès de Castro represented a crucial moment not only in the history of theatre but also in that of emotions: the emergence of a new behavioural norm favourable to tearful effusion coincided with the controversy over the changes of what is under-stood as an « audience », thus foreshadowing the emergence of an impressionable public space

    Précurseure du genre larmoyant, la tragédie Inès de Castro (1723) d’Antoine Houdar de La Motte occupe aujourd’hui une place importante dans l’histoire du théâtre, mais on connaît encore peu de choses de la vive querelle occasionnée par le succès de cette pièce, dont le climax arracha d’abondantes larmes au public et suscita un débat intense. Cet examen des textes polémiques, publiés depuis août 1723 jusqu’en mars 1724, montre que la querelle d’Inès de Castro représente un moment crucial non seulement de l’histoire du théâtre, mais aussi de celle des émotions : l’émergence d’une nouvelle norme comportementale favorable à l’effusion de larmes coïncide dans cette controverse avec la mutation de la notion de « public », présageant ainsi l’avènement d’un espace public sensible
