    Dentro de la muy reconocida poesía de los Siglos de Oro, hay una parte que, quizá por desinterés o por haber quedado a la sombra del resto, ha pasado desapercibida ante los ojos de la crítica. Estamos hablando de aquellas composiciones dedicadas al elogio, a la alabanza y la adulación de poderosos.

    Como referencia principal de todos estos llamados ‘panegíricos’, y casi como una obra obligatoria para todos los que los compusieron a lo largo del siglo xvii, encontramos el Panegírico al duque de Lerma, de don Luis de Góngora. El reconocimiento de su importancia a día de hoy es un hecho indiscutible, por lo que su estudio es esencial si queremos conocer en profundidad tanto dicha obra, como todas las que bebieron de ella. Para realizar tal investigación, nos parecen imprescindibles los testimonios de los eruditos de su época. José de Pellicer, Angulo y Pulgar y, en mayor medida, Salcedo Coronel. Dedicarán gran parte de sus comentarios de la poesía gongorina al análisis de esta obra, dejándonos grandes testimonios, no solo de la misma, sino también del plano sociocultural de la época. Su recuperación, estudio y consideración nos parecen absolutamente necesarios, pues no solo nos acercan más a esta obra, sino que suponen un enriquecimiento a nivel filológico y cultural del que, sin duda, podemos seguir aprendiendo.

    In the literature of the Spanish Golden Age we can find a genre of works focused on praising and flattering important people of the moment to gain their favor: the panegyrics. Unfortunately, they have been forgotten over the years. We do not actually know if this problem is due to the professionals’ disinterest around this subject. Maybe it has been obscured by the importance of other subject matters, but, in any case, it is important that we try and fix it.

    A very significant and essential work of this genre in the seventeenth century is Luis de Góngora and his Panegírico al duque de Lerma. Nowadays the important role of this poem is highly recognized and so we need to study it in order to really understand the other works that were inspired by it. To do so, we must get back to those scholars who dedicated their time to study it back in that century:

    Angulo y Pulgar, Pellicer and Salcedo Coronel. Their words will help us discover more about Góngora’s Panegírico and all the social and cultural issues present during its composition. Thereby, it is our job to recover, study and publish these pieces since we believe that bringing them back will help us to know a lot more about fields like History, Art, Literature, Rhetoric or Etymology, and the way of thinking at the time and how that society and culture were.
