El uso del término desarrollo en el sentido actual puede rastrearse hasta el comienzo de la Guerra Fría. A partir de allí, diferentes modelos de desarrollo fueron propuestos y probados en distintos grados. El año 2000 alentó una profunda revisión de la situación de desarrollo de los pueblos que culminó en la adopción de los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio y, finalmente, en los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible. La pandemia de COVID-19 motiva una revisión de dicho compromiso y de su posibilidad de éxito.

The use of the term development in the current sense can be traced back to the beginning of the Cold War. From then on, different models for development were proposed and tested in different degrees. The year 2000 inspired a profound revision of the development situation of peoples that culminated in the adoption of the Millennium Development Goals and, finally, in the Sustainable Development Goals. The COVID-19 pandemic urges a revision of that commitment and its chances of success.
