    Como enfermera, me sentía preparada para dar respuesta concreta, medible y registrable a problemas de salud; pero ante el sufrimiento de un enfermo terminal y su familia, en espera del desenlace final, los recursos profesionales que hasta ahora había manejado con eficacia no parecían los mas adecuados. La negativa del enfermo a conocer el alcance de su enfermedad y el pacto de silencio que se estableció entre los allegados, añadían más dificultad al trabajo que debía realizar. Día a día, comprobé (a pesar de lo que creía hasta ese momento) que posicionándome junto a ellos, cercana, receptiva y respetando su voluntad, daba plena satisfacción a las expectativas de esta familia respecto a mi trabajo. Cosa que no hubiése conseguido manteniendo una actitud profesional enfrentada, técnica y distante.

    As a professional nurse, I felt capable of giving a specific response, measurable and recordable, to any healthcare issue; but, faced with the suffering of a terminally ill patient and his family while waiting for the inevitable to happen in life, the professional help I had managed to offer effectively until now seemed to be insufficient. The fact that the patient refused to be informed about the real extent of his disease, together with the pact of silence made by his dearest ones only made my work even harder to accomplish. Day after day, I realized (in spite of what I had thought until then) that being in a close, receptive position, and respecting his wishes, fully satisfied the family's expectations of my work. That's something I hadn't achieved with a 'professional', distant and merely technical approach.
