    La fundación del Instituto Geográfico en 1870 marca un hito en la historia de la modernización de la información geográfica en España. El nuevo organismo, cuyo primer director fue el destacado geodesta Carlos Ibáñez e Ibáñez de Íbero, acometió la formación de un mapa topográfico de todo el territorio nacional con carácter sistemático, completo y uniforme. Aunque su organización y funciones han variado a lo largo del tiempo, el Instituto Geográfico se ha mantenido desde entonces como la principal institución de la cartografía oficial española.

    The founding of the Geographic Institute in 1870 marks a milestone in the history of the modernization of geographic information in Spain. The new organization, whose first director was the prominent geodesist Carlos Ibáñez and Ibáñez de Íbero, undertook the formation of a topographic map of the entire national territory in a systematic, complete and uniform manner. Although its organization and functions have varied over time, the Geographic Institute has remained since then as the main institution of Spanish official cartography.
