Evaluation of Surface Tension of Dental Implants with Different Surfaces

    • Purpose The wettability of the surface of a dental implant is essential for osseointegration. Such feature can be assessed through the surface between a liquid and the metal surface. The goal was to determine the surface tension by measuring the contact angle between a drop of water and the surface of the implant.

      Material and Methods The contact angle was measured by means of confocal microscopy on five samples of five titanium-based implant types with different surface characteristics (Rosterdent, ML, Biomet 3i, Q-implant and Tree-Oss). In all cases, measurement was done on a flat portion of the implant apex. The data obtained was subject to ANOVA variance analysis and Tuckey test. The significance level was 0.05.

      Results The measurement of the contact angle of all the implants was less 90°. Tree-Oss implants showed the smallest contact angle (16°± 8°) and was significantly less than the contact angles of the ML, Biomet 3i y Q-implant samples (p<0.05). Rosterdent implants showed a contact angle of (24°± 6°), which was similar to Tree-Oss and ML, but significantly smaller to the contact angles obtained by Biomet 3i y Q-implant (p<0.05). Finally, Biomet 3i, Q-implant and ML presented the biggest contact angles (44°±7°); (49°±7°); (39°±15°), respectively; but, considering the experimental uncertainty, they were very similar to each other.

      Conclusion In accordance with the average values of the contact angles obtained, it can be concluded that all the implant surfaces studied presented high levels of wettability.
