En la historia institucional de Tarifa fue significativo el intento de su transformación en 1792 en corregimiento de letras. Un objetivo tardío, en la corriente reformista española, que fracasó a pesar de las instancias de parte de su cabildo para evitar el mando de un militar. La consulta ofrecida al rey, junto a las solicitudes y recomendaciones de los propuestos, evidenciaron el perfil de los sujetos idóneos y las influyentes recomendaciones que concitaron. La crisis de 1793 perpetuó el modelo de la monarquía administrativa en los territorios estratégicos frente a la corriente civilista de la autoridad de un magistrado.

In the institutional history of Tarifa, the attempt of its transformation in 1792 in corregimiento of letters was significant. A late objective, in the Spanish reformist current, which failed despite the requests from its city council to avoid the command of a military man. The consultation offered to the king, together with the requests and recommendations of those proposed, evidenced the profile of the suitable subjects and the influential recommendations that they elicited. The crisis of 1793 perpetuated the model of the administrative monarchy in the strategic territories against the civilist current of the authority of a magistrate.
