This paper considers what can be achieved for the victim by the efforts of the restorative justice movement. Its central focus of concern is the problems and possibilities for the victim inherent in restorative justice and, after considering its definition, it asks two questions. Can restorative justice be therapeutic? Does restorativej ustice offer the opportunity for reconciliation? These questions reflect two of the domain assumptions the restorative justice movement makes on behalf of the ideal victim. This paper concludes by suggesting restorative justice initiatives need the ‘victim’ more than the victim needs restorative justice.
