Resumen de Identidad, tierra y conflicto en la colonia francesa de Jicaltepec (Veracruz, México), siglo XIX

Con mucha facilidad, el mundo académico suele calificar de “comunidad” a grupos extranjeros instalados en México. En este artículo se propone debatir la operatividad de esta categoría en un caso que reúne, a priori, las condiciones para su aplicación: la colonia francesa de Jicaltepec, primera colonia agrícola exitosa del país, constantemente alimentada por nuevas olas de inmigrantes en el siglo XIX. A pesar de estas condiciones, el análisis de fuentes conservadas tanto en Francia como en México muestra sus profundos conflictos y cómo estos afectaron la construcción de una identidad comunitaria, en constante relación con el entorno inmediato de la colonia. Finalmente, se observa por parte de sus líderes una utilización estratégica de la identidad francesa y de la identificación comunitaria a través de un discurso que buscaba ocultar las muchas fragmentaciones que conocían los franceses instalados en la región.

The academic world described, with certain easiness, the colonies of foreigners installed on Mexico with the concept of "community". This article is focus on the discussion of the use and the operational capacity of this category, in the cases of the foreseen conditions of its application: the French colony of Jicaltepec, first successful agricultural colony in the country, constantly fed by new waves of immigrants in the 19th century. Despite these conditions, the analysis of sources preserved in Mexico as well as France shows deep conflicts and how they affected the construction of a collective identity, in constant relationship with the immediate surroundings of the colony. Finally, we observe a strategic use of French identity and community identification by their leaders through a speech that sought to hide the many divisions of the French installed in the region.
