  The continuous growth rate of the Portuguese population since the beginning of the 19th century was abruptly interrupted between 1910 and 1920 due to the outbreak of the “Spanish flu”.   O ritmo de crescimento contínuo da população portuguesa desde inícios do século XIX foi bruscamente interrompido entre 1910 e 1920, devido ao surto da “gripe espanhola”. Com este estudo, numa perspetiva microanalítica, procuramos analisar o estado sanitário e o impacto da epidemia em Guimarães, uma cidade do norte de Portugal, recorrendo a fontes hospitalares, do registo civil, dos serviços administrativos do município e da imprensa local
