Una inscripción medieval inédita en la iglesia de San Miguel de Aguayo (Cantabria)

    Recientemente se ha descubierto en la iglesia parroquial de San Miguel de Aguayo (Cantabria), durante el transcurso de unos trabajos de reparo de la techumbre del edificio, una inscripción medieval inédita de la tipología monumentum fundationis, fechada en el año 1173, que fue reutilizada como material constructivo durante la edificación del templo actual en el siglo XVII. En este artículo se aborda la edición crítica del epígrafe atendiendo a sus caracteres formales, génesis, tradición y conservación,  y su contexto arqueológico e histórico, en base a los testimonios materiales y documentales conocidos. Su análisis integral y relacionado, nos permite afirmar que nos encontramos muy probablemente ante la inscripción fundacional de la antigua iglesia de San Miguel de Aguayo, cuyo emplazamiento anterior se localizaría en el sitio donde actualmente se conservan algunos restos arquitectónicos de la ermita de San Cristóbal, para levantarse unos siglos después en su ubicación actual.

    Recently, during the restoration to the building’s roof, a previously unknown medieval inscription of the monumentum fundationis type was discovered in the parish church of San Miguel de Aguayo (Cantabria). Dated to 1173, the element it is on was reused as building material during the construction of the current seventeenth-century temple. This article examines this epigraph by way of a critical edition, taking into account its formal characteristics, genesis, tradition and conservation, and its archaeological and historical context, based on known materials and documentary evidence. An integral and holistic analysis allows us in all likelihood to affirm that this is the foundational inscription of the old church of San Miguel de Aguayo, whose previous location may be located where certain architectural ruins of the hermitage of San Cristóbal are currently preserved, and a few centuries later was rebuilt in its current location.
