Transporte y Obra Pública, Comunicación y Territorio, son conceptos básicos, íntimamente ligados, que nos proporcionan un legado patrimonial de enorme riqueza, de conocimiento de nuestra historia pasada, presente y futura. Unificar estos conceptos, conjugar sus valores históricos, es el objetivo de la Cátedra Demetrio Ribes, y transmitir el conocimiento de esta parcela de nuestra historia con la intención pedagógica de revalorizar este legado patrimonial es su misión. En esta lectura estriba su novedad, diferenciándola de otras ofertas culturales, como los museos del transporte, museos del ferrocarril, museos del automóvil o museos de la ciencia y la técnica.
La historia de las obras públicas es de una riqueza de contenidos asombrosa. En su devenir contribuye la técnica, la tecnología, la ciencia, la mecánica, las distintas fuentes de energía, etc., y tiene, a su vez, claras implicaciones geográficas, económicas, políticas o sociales. Científicos, industriales, empresarios, promotores, constructores, ingenieros, arquitectos, trabajadores, políticos, viajeros, etc. serán también protagonistas de este relato histórico. Las novedades tecnológicas y científicas, la promoción de estas obras públicas, las opciones políticas, los nuevos sistemas constructivos, el tráfico de mercancías y de viajeros, son datos que nos ilustran, de nuevo, el acontecer de la historia del transporte y de las obras públicas. Su historia es hoy indisociable del concepto del territorio construido, de su delimitación y ordenación, de sus hitos y señales, del concepto de transporte como medio de comunicación de ideas, técnicas y culturas, del concepto de paisaje como lectura y diseño de una forma de habitar en el mundo. La lectura del territorio es la lectura de un espacio y de un tiempo, donde cada periodo histórico sedimentará toda una serie de actuaciones. Como bien nos comenta Arturo Soria: "Tras un largo proceso de transformación el territorio se consolida como una gran construcción, un artificio dotado de una historia y un lenguaje propios que lo convierten en un objeto cultural, una gran obra de arte." La Cátedra Demetrio Ribes es el resultado de un convenio firmado el 19 de noviembre de 2003 entre la Conselleria d'infraestructures i Transport y la Universitat de València. A partir de esa fecha, la Cátedra se constituye como un centro de estudios, sobre la Historia del Transporte y de la Obra Pública en un sentido extensivo del término, en el que se desarrollan proyectos de investigación, programas formativos, culturales y de difusión.
La Cátedra desarrolla una importante labor investigadora, ampliando nuevas líneas de investigación que abarcan el amplio campo de la Historia de la Ingeniería en todas sus vertientes: paisajes y desarrollo territorial, obras e ingenieros, patrimonio y legado cultural, ciencia y tecnología, historia y sociedad, etc.
Un reto que por su entidad científica y su valor patrimonial merece ser el objetivo, y este es el relato que intenta trasmitir esta colaboración.

Transport and Public Works, Communication and Territory are basic concepts, intimately linked, which provide us with a heritage legacy of enormous wealth, of knowledge of our past, present and future history. Unifying these concepts, combining their historical values, is the the objective of the Demetrio Ribes Chair, and transmitting knowledge of this part of our history with the pedagogical intention of revaluing this heritage legacy is its mission. lts novelty ties in this reading, differentiating it from other cultural offers, such as transport museums, railway museums, automobile museums or science and technology museums.
The history of public works is astonishingly rich in content. Technology, technology, science, mechanics, different sources of energy, etc., contribute to its development, which in turn has clear geographical, economic, political and social implications. Scientists, industrialists, businessmen, promoters, builders, engineers, architects, workers, politicians, travellers, etc. Will also be the protagonists of this historical account. Technological and scientific innovations, the promotion of these public works, political choices, new construction systems, freight and passenger traffic, are all data that illustrate, once again, the history of transport and public works. Their history is today inseparable from the concept of the built territory, its delimitation and planning, its landmarks and signs, the concept of transport as a means of communication of ideas, techniques and cultures, the concept of landscape as a reading and design of a way of living in the world. The reading of the territory is the reading of a space and a time, where each historical period will sediment a whole series of actions. As Arturo Soria comments: “After a long process of transformation, the territory is consolidated as a great construction, an artifice endowed with its own history and language that turns it into a cultural object, a great work of art".
The Demetrio Ribes Chair is the result of an agreement signed on 19 November 2003 between the Department of Infrastructures and Transport and the University of Valencia. Since that date, the Chair has been established as a study centre on the History of Transport and Public Works in the broadest sense of the term, in which research projects, training, cultural and dissemination programmes are carried out.
The Chair carries out important research work, extending new lines of research that cover the broad field of the History of Engineering in all its aspects: landscapes and territorial development, works and engineers, heritage and cultural legacy, science and technology, history and society, etc.
A challenge that, due to its scientific entity and its heritage value, deserves to be the objective, and this is the story that this collaboration aims to convey.
