La aparición de nuevos materiales y procesos técnicos trajo consigo la evolución del diseño industrial, una de las disciplinas más decisivas en la evolución de la humanidad hacia el conocido como estado del bienestar, dando sus primeros pasos en la década de los 30. La sustitución de materiales naturales por otros sintéticos hizo que, por primera vez, se pudiera realizar todo aquello que se pensaba, dando origen al paraíso de los objetos que la alquimia contemporánea del plástico y la introducción de nuevas técnicas permitían en su fabricación.El desarrollo del consumo en masa que propiciaron los objetos de plástico hacía necesaria la figura del diseñador. Su papel se irá imponiendo incluso a la figura del artista, llegando a influir directamente no sólo en los procesos de fabricación sino también en su estructura y por supuesto en el aspecto final del objeto.Este artículo, fundamentado en la obra de Robert Davol Budlong, uno de los grandes diseñadores norteamericanos, está basado, principalmente, en el estudio de los formularios de aplicación para patentes en la United States Patent and Trademarks Office accesible on-line (USPTO. 2019). De esta forma documentamos la autoría de numerosos objetos que dieron los primeros pasos hacia la contemporaneidad.

The appearance of new materials and technical processes brought with it the evolution of industrial design, one of the most decisive disciplines in the evolution of humanity towards what is known as the welfare state, taking its first steps in the 1930s. The substitution of natural materials by synthetic ones made it possible, for the first time, the making of everything that was only desired before, giving rise to the paradise of objects that contemporary alchemy of plastic and the introduction of new techniques allowed in its manufacture.The development of mass consumption brought about by plastic objects made the figure of the designer necessary. His role would be even imposed on the figure of the artist, coming to directly influence not only the manufacturing processes but also its structure and of course the final appearance of the object.This article based on the work of Robert Davol Budlong, one of the great North American designers, is based mainly on the study of patent application forms in the United States Patent and Trademarks Office accessible online (USPTO. 2019). In this way we document the authorship of numerous objects that took the first steps towards contemporaneity.
