    Per als estudiants, res és tan habitual com interpretar les lleis ponderals de la química mitjançant el concepte valència i exemplificar-les mitjançant compostos inorgànics simples. De la mateixa manera, aquestes substàncies inorgàniques solen utilitzar-se per exemplificar les nocions d'enllaç i estructura química en els llibres de text de química.

    No obstant això, l'itinerari d'aprenentatge no reflecteix l'aproximació històrica, atès que va ser en el camp de la química orgànica, més que en el de la inorgànica, on va existir la necessitat de conèixer la composició i l'estructura íntima dels compostos. Aquest article pretén explorar aquelles rutes que més significativament van contribuir al desenvolupament dels conceptes valència, enllaç i estructura química.

    For current students nothing is more natural than to interpret in valence terms the laws of chemical combination exemplified by simple inorganic compounds. Similarly, inorganic substances are often used to illustrate the concepts of chemical bond and structure in chemistry textbooks. However, the learning pathway does not reflect the historical approach, because there existed in the field of organic chemistry, rather than in inorganic chemistry, the need to know the inner structure and composition of their compounds. This article is intended to explore those routes that most significantly contributed to the development of the concepts of chemical valence, bond and structure.
