This article studies the different types of relative clauses and the latest generative analyses of them, to conclude that only one distinction is relevant: that between restrictive and non-restrictive clauses. The differences between them may in turn be reduced to subordinate vs independent nature in the D-structure, an analysis which leads to a better understanding of their syntactic and semantic behaviour, although it poses important theoretical problems yet to be solved.
