  El presente artículo analiza cómo y por qué el mundo antiguo está de nuevo convirtiéndose en fuente de legitimación política y cultural. Se presta una atención preferente a la antigua Roma, idealizada como modelo y empleada también como paradigma imperial dentro de los ámbitos no académicos, donde persiste una imagen muy esencialista del pasado, la cual parece responder a una recurrente necesidad de referentes en el contexto actual de crisis sistémica. En paralelo, ahondamos también en los argumentos que, vinculados a un nuevo giro “derechizador” en parte del planeta, usan el ejemplo romano para justificar planteamientos racistas y xenófobos. Todo ello se adereza a veces con un marcado carácter anticientífico.

  This article examines how and why the Ancient World is once again becoming a source of political and cultural legitimation. More specifically, we pay attention to ancient Rome, idealized as a model and then used as an imperial paradigm in nonacademic realms, where an essentialist image of the past persists; which seems to respond to the recurring need for referents in the current context of systemic crisis. Simultaneously, we study the arguments that, closely linked to a new social shift to the right in many countries, use the Roman example to substantiate racist and xenophobic claims, all of this sometimes accompanied by an anti-scientific attitude.
