La guía de la ruta Medellín-Ciudad Bolivar-Río Arquía en el departamento de Antioquia suministra una visión general de los rasgos geológicos del sector septentrional del área comprendida entre las cordilleras Central y Occidental, haciendo énfasis en las características y posición estructural de las unidades litoestratigráficas con respecto al sistema de fallas que limitan un ambiente oceánico al Oeste de uno continental al Este y su incidencia en los modelos de terrenos planteados para este sector del territorio Colombiano.La sección Medellín-Ciudad Bolívar localizada entre el flanco occidental de la Cordillera Central y el oriental de la Occidental, cerca de la depresión del río Cauca, permite observar las relaciones espaciales-estructurales entre metamorfitas paleozoicas y rocas mesozoicas oceánicas a lo largo de los sistemas de fallas Silvia-Pijao y Cauca-Almaguer.En el cañón del río Cauca entre el río Arquía y La Pintada y en el flanco occidental de la Cordillera Central entre esta población y Medellín, metamorfitas de media presión (Complejo Arquía) y metamorfitas de baja presión (Metasedimentitas de Sinifaná y Complejo Cajamarca) de edad paleozoica se encuentran separadas tectónicamente entre sí por rocas volcano- sedimentarias oceánicas cretácicas (Complejo Quebradagrande) por los sistemas de falla Cauca-Almaguer, Silvia-Pijao y San Jerónimo respectivamente.

The field trip of the Medellin-Ciudad Bolivar-Arquia river route, within the Antioquia Deprtment, enables a general view of the geological features of the northermmost Central and Westerm Cordilleras, particularty the geological characteristics and structural position of different litostratigraphic units, relative to the main faults systems that maark the boundary between a continental enviroment to the east and an oceanic enviroment to the west, and their incidence on the tectonic models formulated for this area of Colombia.The Medellin - Ciudad Bolivar section between the western flank of the Central Cordillera and the eastern flank of the Occidental Cordillera , near the Cauca - Patia depression, shows the spatial-structural relationships between the Paleozoic metamorphic rocks and the Mesozoic oceanic rocks along the Silvia-Pijao an the Cauca-Almaguer fault systems.In the Cauca river canyon, between the Arquia river and municipality of La Pintada, and in the western flank of the Central Cordillera, between La Pintada and Medellin, the Paleozoic medium pressure (Arquía Complex) and low presure (Sinifaná metasediments and Cajamarca complex) metamorphic rocks are separated technically from each other by Cretaceous oceanic volcano-sedimentary rocks (Quebradagrande Complex). These units are separated from west to east by the Cauca-Almaguer, Silvia - Pijao and San Jerónimo fault systems.
