Resumen de On the Grammaticalization of dizque
This paper studies the grammaticalization of Latin American Spanish dizque (‘they say that/it is said that’, a quotative/reportative strategy) with particular reference to data from secondary sources in Bolivian, Colombian, Ecuadorian and Mexican Spanish, as well as diachronic data from Old Castilian. The evidential and epistemic properties of dizque are discussed in relation to current theoretical debates regarding whether a continuum exists between lexical and grammatical evidentiality. An alternative analysis of dizque is presented as evidence for such a continuum in contrast to that of Aikhenvald (2007), who analyzes dizque as an emergent evidential that may not eventually become a grammatical evidential. By contrast, the analysis defended in the current paper proposes that, while dizque may be an emergent evidential in some dialects, in others it seems to have become a grammatical evidential whose expression is not (yet) obligatory.
