  • Resumen
    • This article deals with the expression of evidentiality in Rioplatense Spanish, a variety spoken in the area of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The analysis focuses on decir (‘to say’), a verb used to express most evidential categories. Special attention is given to the form dice, which is in the process of semantic and grammatical changes. Dice moved from lexicon and grammar into discourse to become a particle. In its most advanced stage of transformation it is reinterpreted as a hearsay index, with encoded evidential meaning.
