  Esta es la historia de la desconocida presencia en China de un arquitecto madrileño en las décadas de mayor esplendor de la ciudad de Shanghái. Comenzó su trayectoria en la Filipinas española, triunfó en la China pre-comunista y su fama lo llevó a Hollywood y México. En sus tres décadas de prolífica carrera, Abelardo Lafuente realizó proyectos de todo tipo para clientes diversos en cinco países de dos continentes. Por tanto, estamos ante una figura tan singular y única que el estudio de su obra heterodoxa y ecléctica en un entorno tan aislado y diferente del europeo hacen que este arquitecto, sólo mencionado póstumamente por Blasco Ibáñez y Fernando Chueca-Goitia, sea ahora de obligado conocimiento para todo aquel que quiera entender la arquitectura que exportaba España a principios de siglo XX así como los orígenes de una metrópolis como Shanghái y el porqué de la existencia de un reducido grupo de audaces empresarios españoles que prosperaron en tan adversas condiciones.

  This is the story of the unknown presence in China of a Madrid architect in the decades of greatest splendor of the city of Shanghai. He started in the Spanish Philippines, triumphed in pre-communist China, and his fame took him to Hollywood and Mexico. In his three decades of prolific career, Lafuente has carried out projects of all kinds for diverse clients in five countries on two continents. Therefore, we are facing such a singular and unique figure that the study of his heterodox and eclectic work in an environment so isolated and different from Europe makes this figure, only mentioned posthumously by Blasco Ibáñez and Fernando Chueca-Goitia, now of mandatory knowledge for anyone who wants to understand the architecture that Spain exported at the beginning of the 20th century as well as the origins of a metropolis like Shanghai and the reason for the existence of a small group of audacious Spanish entrepreneurs who prospered in such adverse conditions.
